As awareness increases about the many drawbacks of LED lighting technology, demand for safer, more appropriate options is increasing. Although more lighting manufacturers are now producing warmer coloured options, with some also offering diffusing optics to tackle glare, discomfort and hazard issues - (and one overseas company now offers lightbulbs for domestic use with red and near-infrared wavelengths of light), please be aware that the majority of LEDs on the market today do not deliver safe quality lighting. For this reason we have listed suppliers who stock some of the best options currently available on the market, with the knowledge that for the most part, compromise is involved as there's still a huge need for improvement in LED technology. To learn more about these problems read LED Technology Basics.
ADLT - ADVANCED LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES is the first supplier in NZ to provide the Cree 2700K RSW Series (marketed in NZ as Syrius.) While this street lighting luminaire is not technically amber in colour, its spectral characteristics are comparable to other 2200 K LEDs on the market. It incorporates technology that successfully addresses the problems of glare and non-uniform light distribution via patented lightpipe (wavemax) and diamond facet microlenses. This kind of glare free LED street lighting should be the standard for state highways and thoroughfares in New Zealand. (Unfortunately, the NZTA continues to recommend unfit-for-purpose 4000 K when the maximum should be 2700 K, with 2200 K for residential zones.) To learn more about this luminaire please watch this short clip.

Most importantly please read this white paper released in early 2022 by Cree. It's the first time a lighting manufacturer has publicly acknowledged and addressed the problems that exist with existing LED lighting technology and it also explains why existing metrics used by the lighting industry and contractors are invalid and cannot be applied to LED street lighting.
ADLT also supply ecologically responsible amber LED options. Not all amber LEDs are created equal - many other amber lighting products on the market are phosphor converted (PC) rather than dedicated amber. These can still produce blue wavelength light that is visible and disruptive to wildlife, even though the light appears amber to humans. ADLT provide specially designed monochromatic amber LEDs produce light with a narrow spectral distribution that minimises disruption to turtle behaviour. Amber LEDs also typically produce fewer lumens than their white-light equivalent, reducing disruption to wildlife even further.

COOLON LED LIGHTING
Coolon have a range of products available with a Dark Sky option: the Dark Sky compliant products are optimized to preserve the night sky without affecting the light quality on the ground.
These fittings are equipped with a special hood or a banner around each LED plate, minimizing scattering of the light and focusing it on the ground where you need it.
In addition to the special hood, the Dark Sky fittings feature optimized CRI. For example, below are the recommendation currently active in Chile, one of the world's leading Dark Sky advocators :

ENERGY LIGHT supplies amber 1600 - 2200 K LEDs by the brand EWO. Please see the 1600 K in the photo on the top right of this page. This light source emits a warm colour without loss of colour rendition. Although the light source has exposed diodes, shielding can be added to reduce glare. Dimming is also possible. The EWO series can also be operated using a smart technology app on a mobile phone.
Energylight can also provide shielded, ecologically responsible, dark sky compliant 1600 K amber bollards.
Please phone Mike Geddis on 021 514 102 or email him mike@energylight.net
EVOLVE LIGHTING supplies dark sky compliant amber 2200 LEDS availble in a wide range of lights sources including car parking, bollards, streetlights, wallpacks, etc. They also specialise in sports lighting with well designed and shielded floodlights tohat can help minimise the light pollution from outdoor fields and courts.
Please be aware that when ordering amber LED lighting there is a 8-12 weeks lead time.

MHL (MARK HERRING LIGHTING) now provides dark sky compliant lighting (including bollards) which follows the “five principles for responsible outdoor lighting” from Dark-Sky International (formely the IDA) and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). They offer shielded, amber or PC amber lighting along with sensors and timers.

TARGETTI NZ provide Italian-made lighting that can be customised for individual projects. Some of their street lighting luminaires have optical diffusers so the light that is emitted is indirect with less glare. Well designed optics also mean light can be directed precisely where it's needed, which is important near waterways to protect aquatic life. Targetti can also supply Italian-made bollards with an ecologically responsible colour spectrum for streets, pathways, parks and reserves.

WE-EF Lighting
From a scientific perspective, extremely warm-coloured light with a minimised blue component is particularly kind to nature and wildlife. Wild-Light integrates adaptive lighting technology, sensors and connectivity. The LED modules can provide two different colour temperatures, combined in suitable luminaires, such as the CFT, RFL and VFL pole luminaire series – the more nature-friendly colour temperature of 2200 K and warm white with 3000 K.

CROSSROADS have a Narrow Band Amber (NBA) street lights which emit a warm amber colour with zero blue wavelengths of light that matches older low-pressure sodium light sources. These are ideal for astronomical sites, areas seeking dark sky status, and places that want to protect ecology and minimise the impact of artificial light at night. Additionally, they are well suited for cities and municipalities, arterial roadways, city parks, pathways and trails.
CROSSROADS also manufacture Phosphor Converted (PC) LED street lights with significantly low blue content in a warm amber colour that matches the 2000 K of older high-pressure sodium light sources. These are particularly suited for areas seeking dark sky status and places wanting to minimise the impact of artificial light at night on ecology. Additionally, they are suited for cities and municipalities, 10 to 15 m tall poles along roadways, highways and intercity loops, universities and schools, parking lots and area lighting.
Both the PC and NBA fixtures are fully shielded with completely enclosed LEDs, eliminating glare. They are also designed to illuminate only where intended, avoiding unnecessary light spill/trespass/light pollution.

Ignia Lighting
Ignia developed PC (phosphor-converted) Amber LED, which eliminates the peak emission level at 440 nm to maintain high efficiency levels (135 lm/W). For years, lighting has been unchecked and excessive. Most often no efforts have been made to seek the most efficient and environmentally responsible technology.

As seen on the right, adjustable, tunable LED streetlights to protect ecology in La Citadelle Park, Lille, France. From April to November, when the bats are most active, only the amber LED modules switch on and off to protect them. Then from November to March, when the bats hibernate, the LED modules with amber and white LEDs (2,200K) switch on and off depending on the time of night and the presence of people.
