In 2020, the township of Kaikoura on the East Coast of the South island of New Zealand, began it's goal to protect the night sky and their precious population of endangered Hutton's Shearwaters, and other important wildlife. This involved a team effort engaging and educating the community, schools, businesses, and council, of the many benefits involved. An important part of this process was convincing the council and various regulatory agencies of the benefits of PC amber 2200 K LEDs instead of the planned disruptful and harmful white 4000 K LEDs. Many of the streetlights were retrofitted to PC Amber 2200K LEDs (see photo gallery below). Further action resulted in the successful installation of red LEDs at the Z Fuel Station (pictured above). In September 2024, Kaikoura attained International Dark Sky Sanctuary status with DarkSky International, click on the LEARN MORE button - while the township itself is now aiming to become a an internationally recognised DarkSky Community.
